Several teams, committees, and volunteer groups help support, plan, and manage the ministries of St. John.  Some of their service is lived out in the spotlight, but more than often these groups work dutifully behind the scenes to make sure St. John’s witness is faithful, vibrant, and sustainable.  If you have gifts you would like to share in these areas, please contact the church office for more information.

Administration Committees & Volunteers

Church Council
  • Made up of elected members and overseen by the executive officers and pastors, the church council is the governing body of our church.  They meet once a month to make decisions, oversee ministries, and ensure the congregation, staff, and pastors are living out our mission to “Share the Love of Christ”. Visitors are welcome.
Finance Committee
  • The Finance Committee, in conjunction with the church treasurer and financial secretary, meets once a month to review monthly and annual finances, make budgets, manage expenses, funds, and investments, and make recommendations to Council.
Property Committee
  • The Property Committee helps oversee the building and grounds, to make sure our church is comfortable, clean, and welcoming. The Property Committee coordinates and helps with the daily upkeep and renovation of the church building and property.
Memorial Committee
  • The Memorial Committee manages memorial funds and considers the purchase of items or the funding of projects suitable for commemorative or memorial purposes.  Meetings are held four times a year to discuss funds available and disbursement.
Stewardship Committee
  • The Stewardship Committee cultivates generosity so that our mission can be sustained into the future.  Their work includes telling the story of our church, leading appeals, exploring stewardship themes, developing financial, benevolence, and volunteering goals, and helping members find their role in contributing to our mission.
Columbarium Committee
  • The Columbarium in the Memorial Garden provides members the option of reserving burial niches for their ashes on the church grounds where meaningful events were commemorated and faith was put into practice. The committee oversees this holy space.
Gardening & Property Volunteers
  • In order to maintain our property and enhance it with natural beauty, many members volunteer their time and skills to plant flowers, trim trees and shrubs, mow the lawn, fix up the building, and more.
Financial, Office, IT, and Other Volunteers
  • Volunteer opportunities exist for those who want to offer their gifts of administration: counting offering after services, assisting the staff with office work, providing IT support, or other various tasks needed to support the work of the church.

Worship Teams & Volunteers

Altar Guild
  • The Altar Guild prepares and enhances the worship space by seeing that the altar paraments and banners are hung, communion is prepared, the flowers are ready, and all worship materials are cleaned and stored appropriately.
Busy Bag Team
  • Busy Bags are designed to help parents of young children by providing quiet activities during worship. This team cleans, prepares, and restocks these bags for weekly use.
Worship Assistants - Deacons, Communion Assistants, Ushers, Greeters
  • We offer many ways to get involved in worship!  Deacons read scripture and help pastors with prayers and worship duties, Communion Assistants help serve wine and grape juice, Ushers manage crowds and hand out bulletins, and Greeters make sure everyone is welcomed with a smile.  The scheduling of these roles is handled by our Worship Volunteer Coordinator.
Wedding Coordinators
  • Wedding coordinators serve as a liaison between the pastors, the staff, and the couple to plan the wedding ceremony, and to assist with last-minute details to ensure that the ceremony goes smoothly.
SJ Support Team
  • These volunteers ensure that our values of welcome and safety are lived out during worship times, assisting visitors, monitoring the narthex, and providing resources.
Sound Board Technicians & The Livestream Team
  • These teams oversee the technical aspects of worship, such as microphones and cameras, ensuring everyone is able to easily see, hear, and participate in worship, both in the room and at home.
St. John Players
  • This informal group of theatrical adults bring scripture and faith lessons to life by occasionally performing in skits and Bible dramas as needed throughout the year.
Lay Preachers & Speakers
  • Lutherans believe lay people (non-pastors) are just as worthy to share their faith from the pulpit.  Members of our congregation, including youth, have undertaken training to preach, and many have told their story as a part of special services and videos.

Youth Ministry Teams

Sunday School Team
  • This group of volunteers, made up of adults and older youth, manages the program by choosing and distributing curriculum, supporting teachers, communicating with parents, and more.
Sunday School Teachers
  • This dedicated group of volunteers help shepherd our youth through their early years of faith, teaching lessons in creative ways.
Care Group Leaders
  • This team of small group leaders accompany youth through our three year Confirmation program, providing a listening ear, life wisdom, and another example of a trusted, Christian adult.
Friends of the Youth
  • This group of volunteers oversees and supports our older youth ministries (7th - 12th grade).  Every year, they revise and help lead the youth calendar, make decisions, chaperone lock-ins and mission trip, and tweak the program to better serve the youth and families in our congregation.

Community & Care Teams

Faith Network
  • Faith Network is a team dedicated to helping people find their place at St. John, whether it’s a visitor/new member looking to get involved, or a long time member who has been absent.  Seeking people on the fringes, out of the loop, and those who fell through the cracks, Faith Network works to make sure no one is left behind.
4:12 - The Next Chapter
  • This passionate group functions as our Fellowship Team, planning exciting opportunities to come together for fun, relationship building, and cross-generational connections.  In addition to smaller events, this team annually hosts several large-scale events:
    • Taste of St. John (Massive Potluck & Youth Fundraiser)
    • SJ Church Picnic (Large Summer Gathering)
    • Trunk or Treat (A Community Outreach Event)
Congregational Meals Team
  • This informal team uses their culinary skills to help plan, prepare, and host congregational meals as they are needed, making sure everything is welcoming and well organized.
Funeral Meals Ministry
